Therapeutic Activities is a constant battle between just entertaining and actually providing Therapeutic Stimulus.
This means that there needs to be NEW Ideas, Games, Crafts, Reminiscing, Visual and Audio with almost every session. In some cases due to physical impairments, one session alone may need to be split slightly differently to compensate.
I and many of the other Activity Providers have constantly battled to supply Activities which are fresh and at the same time can meet the budget of either the Activity provider or the homes, depending on how the activities are funded.
I have been constantly searching for new activities, crafts, games etc and have now come up with a range of items which can help anyone working as an Activity Provider, and beyond.

Crafts for the Elderly and Disabled.

There are so many crafts which can be done with the Elderly and Disabled and we have a wide range which we can offer.
Crafts are much more touchy fellie than the art based activities and help greatly with the physical aspect of therapies, but in saying that, if they were related to something to do with seasons or based around family occasions then they can help with the orientation part of therapy also.
Basket
weaving is a great favorite because residents / individuals
can start with simple designs and it keeps them active &
focused on particular tasks.
They also have something at the end of it which is usually
(though not always) useful, and can be offered as a present
to loved ones.
We even find ways to help people with disabilities, and
it is amazing some of the finished products that they end
up with.
Corn
Dolly weaving can be much trickier to master as the materials
need a much gentler touch and with weaving corn you need
to be much nimbler with the fingers.
However there are many elderly people who produce some stunning
results with corn and it is another favorite pastime.
Also there are other materials which can be used instead
of corn, such as paper straws which tend to be much stronger
and still yield some good results.
Paper
Mache modeling is a fun activity for everyone. It is a cheap
way of modeling and results are robust and can be decorative
or practical or indeed both.
You don't have to be very nimble fingered to produce some really exciting results and the product can be painted and varnished afterwards which is sometimes the best part of doing the project in the first place.
Paper mache is very therapeutic in every sense, from the beginnings of tearing up the old paper and mashing the paste into a workable substance, to molding the pulp into a desired shape, and through to the final detailed paint work at the end.
The
only other Activity I can think of as good as Paper Mache
(you may think other wise) is clay modeling.
It is so similar in production to paper
mache but it has a couple of extra advantages. It can be
molded to a much finer detail quite easily, and it sets
like rock.
It can be painted and varnished like paper mache but in
the painting it needs a little more care because some water
based paints can break the clay down, and of course if you
need to use it the way clay is usually used, then you need
to get it fired (but this is not generally necessary).
As with Paper mache, the therapeutic advantages of the medium are very high.
